Two suspected robbers lynched in Lagos
Two suspected armed robbers were lynched by a crowd early Wednesday morning in the Baruwa neighbourhood of Ijeshatedo, Surulere, Lagos, after reportedly attempting to flee from neighbours who had arrested them.
According to eyewitnesses, the event occurred about 5:15 a.m., when the suspects were apprehended following a failed robbery attempt in the community.
According to residents, the mob had initially restrained the men with the intention of handing them over to the police, but the situation turned violent when the suspects allegedly tried to flee.
“We only tied them up, but when they tried to run again, people became angry and attacked them,” one resident said.
The gruesome attack reportedly took place near a primary school, drawing condemnation from residents who expressed concern about the increasing cases of mob violence and the slow response of security agencies.
“It was a terrible sight,” another resident, identified as Miss Oluwabunmi, said. “If the police were more responsive, people wouldn’t resort to jungle justice. No one deserves to be killed like that, especially in front of schoolchildren.”
Cases of mob lynching have become increasingly frequent in parts of Lagos, fuelled by public frustration over rising crime and perceived lapses in law enforcement.
