2026 WCQ playoffs: Congo will be difficult to beat – Troost-Ekong
Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong is anticipating a tough encounter against the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Eric Chelle’s side will aim to secure a place in the intercontinental playoffs when they face the Leopards in the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup African playoffs in Rabat on Sunday.
Nigeria defeated the Panthers of Gabon 4-1 in the semi-final on Thursday to book a place in the final, while the Democratic Republic of Congo stunned Cameroon 1-0 to set up a clash with the Super Eagles.
Troost-Ekong warned that they must perform at their best to overcome Sebastian Desabre’s side.
The centre-back, however, declared that the team is highly motivated for the crucial encounter.
“The boys are happy to be here, to be competing on Sunday. There is no other motivation needed. We all want to go to the World Cup. It is going to be a difficult game. Congo also did well to get to the final. We are looking forward to it,” Troost-Ekong told the Super Eagles media.
“Every game brings a new challenge. Against Gabon it was difficult. They were dangerous on the counter-attack which we dealt with.
“Congo, I know one or two players in their team. I know that they are a good side. It’s going to be a different challenge entirely. I don’t think we can compare them to other teams in Africa but we have to adapt.”
