The body of a young man has been recovered from the Obalende Underbridge Canal on Lagos Island, several days after he was reported missing.
The deceased, whose identity has not been officially released, was said to have lived beneath the bridge for an extended period.
Sources indicated that he was known within the area for engaging in illicit drug activities and was suspected to have been under the influence of drugs prior to the incident.
A search effort later led to the discovery of his remains in the canal, after which officials of the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps, LAGESC, also known as the Kick Against Indiscipline, KAI, unit, were alerted.
The body was subsequently evacuated and taken to the mortuary at Lagos General Hospital for further procedures.
A LAGESC official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the circumstances suggested the man may have accidentally fallen into the canal, adding that his absence initially went unnoticed.
“It appears he slipped into the canal while under the influence of drugs. No one realised he was missing until days later, when a search led to the discovery of the body,” the official said.
Authorities said necessary steps would be taken to conclude investigations and documentation relating to the incident.
