2027: Atiku vows to support ADC flagbearer
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has declared that he will support whoever emerges as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 elections.
Atiku, a chieftain of the party, made the pledge while addressing issues surrounding the ADC’s preparations for its national convention. He stressed that party unity remains a priority, noting that all aspirants must rally behind whoever emerges as the flagbearer.
His comments come amid tensions between the party and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which recently announced it would suspend engagement with the ADC leadership and would not monitor its planned convention, citing a court ruling.
The party, however, rejected INEC’s position and insisted it would proceed with its activities as scheduled.
He said: “We will support and endorse whoever emerges as the flagbearer. How many are we (presidential aspirants), three or four? In the PDP, more than ten of us contested.
“The youths have taken over the party. Most of those seeking elective positions, from councillor to State Assembly, National Assembly and House of Representatives, are young people. We have always said our party belongs to youths and women. Our role is to create the opportunity and hand it over to them.”
Asked if he would back a youth as presidential candidate if ADC presents one, Atiku said, “Yes, why not,”
“Allah has done everything for me. I have brought my sons and grandchildren home. What will be their future and that of their children?” he said.
