Tenant arraigned for assault on landlady in Lagos

A 47-year-old man, Temitope Elegbede, was on Wednesday arraigned before a Chief Magistrates’ Court in Badagry, Lagos State, for allegedly assaulting his landlady.

Elegbede, whose residential address was not disclosed in court, is facing a two-count charge bordering on assault and breach of the peace.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges.The prosecutor, ASP Edet Ekpo, told the court that the incident occurred on April 7, 2026, at about 9:20 a.m. at Panusa Ajobuwe Street, Ilogbo, Badagry.

He alleged that the defendant assaulted his landlady, one Oluwabunmi Otokiti, by grabbing her neck inside her house.

He also alleged that the defendant conducted himself in a manner likely to breach public peace by his conduct.

“The defendant was later arrested and handed over to Police for prosecution,” he said

The offences contravene the provisions of sections 168 and 172 of the Criminal Law of Lagos, 2015.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Nurudeen Layeni, granted the defendant bail in the sum N500,000 with sureties in like sum.

He held that one of the surety must be a community leader.

The court adjourned the case until May 14, for mention.
