Serious Security Incident Involving Civic Advocate Oluyomi Awolowo Raises Fresh Concerns
Concerns over the safety of public advocates resurfaced in 2022 following a serious security incident involving Nigerian civic advocate Oluyomi Awolowo in Lagos.
The incident reportedly occurred on July 29, 2022, and involved Awolowo’s vehicle under circumstances described by associates as deeply alarming. Although no fatalities were reported and Awolowo escaped unharmed, sources close to the family said the episode caused significant emotional distress, particularly among his children.
According to individuals familiar with the matter, the incident came after months of alleged intimidation, including reports of suspicious surveillance, verbal threats, and unidentified vehicles frequently appearing near the family’s residence and routine locations.
Following the incident, Awolowo reportedly visited a police station to file a complaint. However, sources claimed the response he received provided little reassurance regarding his safety or the possibility of preventing future threats.
The development added to growing concerns among some civil society groups over the security risks faced by outspoken advocates and reform campaigners in Nigeria.
Observers noted that incidents involving intimidation of public voices could contribute to fear among citizens seeking to participate openly in civic discussions and governance advocacy.
Associates of the advocate stated that despite mounting pressure and security concerns, the family continued to call for peaceful engagement, democratic reforms, and protection of civic freedoms.
The incident later became one of several episodes cited by supporters as contributing to heightened fears over the safety and wellbeing of the family
