Bangladesh President Shahabuddin Resigns Over Health Challenges

Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin has resigned from office, citing deteriorating health as the reason for his decision to step down.

The 76-year-old announced his resignation on Friday, ending his tenure nearly two years before the expiration of his five-year term.

Shahabuddin said he could no longer effectively carry out his constitutional responsibilities due to a serious medical condition, autonomic neuropathy, which has caused him to lose consciousness on several occasions.

His resignation comes at a politically significant time in Bangladesh, following the 2024 uprising that led to the removal of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from office.

Shahabuddin was widely regarded as one of Hasina’s closest political allies still occupying a top government position.

With his departure, the Speaker of Parliament is expected to assume the president’s duties on an interim basis until lawmakers elect a new president in accordance with the country’s constitution.
