Tyla’s Lagos concert sparks boycott campaign amid xenophobia concerns
Some Nigerian celebrities and social media users have called for a boycott of South African singer Tyla’s planned concert in Lagos, citing renewed concerns over the treatment of Nigerians in South Africa.
The campaign gained momentum online after the concert was announced, with several public figures arguing that South African entertainers continue to enjoy support in Nigeria while Nigerians living in South Africa face xenophobic attacks.
Media personality Radiogad criticised the planned event, saying, “South Africa thinks we’re fools. They attack Nigerians, yet they want to make money from us. We must say no.”
Activist and politician Omoyele Sowore also backed the boycott campaign, urging Nigerians not to support the concert.
He said, “Enough is enough. We cannot continue to pretend that everything is normal while our people are being attacked.”
The development has generated mixed reactions on social media, with some Nigerians supporting the boycott, while others argued that Tyla should not be held responsible for the actions of individuals involved in xenophobic attacks.
Tyla has not publicly responded to the calls for a boycott of her Lagos performance.
