A former Senior Special Assistant to ex-Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Laolu Akande, has said the Osun State governorship election will serve as a test of President Bola Tinubu’s approach to politics.

Akande made the remark while reflecting on the August 15 governorship election and its implications for Nigeria’s democratic development.

He said the election would provide an opportunity to assess the credibility of the political process and determine whether the principle of fairness would be upheld by political actors.

According to Akande, the outcome and conduct of the poll would also offer insight into the political direction of the country ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He urged stakeholders involved in the election to prioritise democratic values and ensure that the wishes of the electorate are respected.

The former presidential aide’s comments come as political parties and their candidates intensify preparations for Saturday’s poll, with the Independent National Electoral Commission expected to conduct the election across the state.

The Osun governorship election has attracted significant attention, particularly because of its potential implications for the political alignments ahead of the 2027 elections.
