Alleged drug trafficking: Peter Obi demands answers on Tinubu’s past
Former Anambra State governor and 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has called on President Bola Tinubu to provide Nigerians with answers over controversies surrounding his past.
Obi made the call while reacting to the ongoing controversy over the release of United States government records relating to allegations involving Tinubu.
He questioned why Nigerians should not have access to records concerning issues that have generated public debate, particularly those linked to a 1990s US investigation.
The controversy centres on requests seeking records from US agencies, including the FBI and Drug Enforcement Administration, concerning an investigation into a Chicago-based heroin ring in the 1990s.
In 1993, about $460,000 linked to Tinubu was forfeited to the US government in a civil proceeding. Tinubu has denied wrongdoing.
Obi argued that public officials should be prepared to account for issues relating to their past, particularly when such matters continue to generate questions among citizens.
He said transparency and accountability should apply to those occupying public offices, stressing that Nigerians deserve clarity on issues surrounding the President.
The development follows legal proceedings in the United States over requests for the release of records relating to the allegations.
The controversy has resurfaced as a political issue ahead of the 2027 general election, with opposition figures demanding greater transparency over the records.
