Lagos-Ibadan Expressway: Motorists Trapped in 14-Hour Gridlock

Motorists and commuters on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway were stranded for over 14 hours on Tuesday following a multiple-vehicle crash at Kara Bridge, which worsened the traffic situation caused by ongoing repair works.

The crash, which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, involved seven vehicles and initially disrupted movement towards Ogun State.

The resulting gridlock later stretched beyond the Long Bridge towards Magboro and into Lagos, leaving motorists in prolonged traffic.

As the congestion worsened, some motorists drove against traffic in an attempt to escape the gridlock, further obstructing vehicles heading towards Lagos.

Motorists travelling from Lagos towards Ogun State were already held up as early as 7am, while the situation deteriorated as the day progressed.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency said its LRT Tiger Squad stationed at C3 was dispatched to the scene at 6:05am following a distress call.

The agency said the team arrived within the projected response time.

Checks by correspondents as of 7pm revealed that the gridlock had extended towards Iyana-Oworo in Lagos, with motorists experiencing slow movement on the Third Mainland Bridge.

The spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Adebayo Taofiq, also confirmed that the traffic was worsened by another accident at the Kara axis in the evening.

Meanwhile, transport fare from Iyana-Oworo to Mowe rose to ₦3,000 from the regular ₦1,200.

The incident occurred amid ongoing repairs on the Kara Bridge, where work on damaged expansion joints has already caused significant traffic disruption.

Motorists have continued to face delays along the busy expressway as repair activities and multiple accidents affect movement between Lagos and Ogun states.
