Lagos seals 14 properties over untreated sewage discharge
The Lagos State Government has sealed 14 properties for allegedly discharging untreated sewage and wastewater into public drainage channels.
The properties were sealed during an enforcement operation carried out by officials of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA).
The enforcement followed complaints and inspections that identified properties allegedly releasing untreated sewage into public drains, thereby contravening environmental regulations.
LASEPA officials said the action was taken to prevent further environmental pollution and protect public health.
The affected properties were reportedly located in different parts of the state and included residential and commercial premises.
The agency warned property owners and facility managers against connecting sewage systems to public drains or disposing of untreated wastewater in ways that could endanger the environment.
It said such practices could contribute to blocked drainage channels, flooding, pollution and the spread of waterborne diseases.
The agency urged owners of properties with defective sewage disposal systems to comply with approved environmental standards and obtain the necessary approvals.
LASEPA said it would continue monitoring properties across the state and take enforcement action against individuals and organisations found violating environmental regulations.
The agency also called on residents to report cases of illegal sewage discharge and other activities that could threaten the environment or public health.
