The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has described hunger in Nigeria as a national emergency, expressing concern over the rising cost of food and worsening food insecurity.

Obi raised the concern in a statement highlighting the difficulties faced by Nigerian households amid rising food prices and declining purchasing power.

The former Anambra State governor said the country’s worsening hunger situation was particularly troubling given its vast agricultural potential and available arable land.

He also questioned the outcome of the Federal Government’s food security interventions, arguing that the country’s hunger situation had deteriorated despite measures introduced by the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

Obi cited Nigeria’s worsening position on global hunger rankings and warned that millions of citizens could face severe food shortages.

He called for greater investment in agricultural production, stressing that improving food security would require deliberate efforts to boost local production and make food more affordable.

The former governor also emphasised the need to address insecurity, which has prevented farmers in some areas from accessing their farmlands, as well as adopt modern farming methods to increase productivity.

Obi maintained that Nigeria could use its agricultural resources to create jobs, improve food supply and reduce dependence on food imports.

He urged the government to prioritise policies that would ease the hardship faced by households and ensure that Nigerians have access to affordable and sufficient food.
