The United Kingdom has warned politicians against fomenting political violence during the forthcoming elections in Ondo and Edo States.

This was made known by the British High Commission in a published on its Twitter account earlier today.

The UK said it would take punitive measures against individuals accused of encouraging violence in the coming polls.

According to the statement, these punitive measures include restrictions on access to the United Kingdom, restrictions on access to UK-based assets, or prosecution under international law.

This announcement comes a day after the United States of America imposed visa restrictions on politicians accused of instigating violence during the Kogi and Bayelsa elections.

British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Ling, in the statement revealed that she had held with meetings with candidates contesting in the Edo election with a view to promote a peaceful voting process.

She also said the High Commission would send observers to monitor the elections in Edo and Ondo States.

The statement reads: “The UK takes a strong stand against election-related violence and just as we did in the general election in 2019, we will continue to take action against individuals we identify as being responsible for violence during elections.

“This could include restrictions on their eligibility to travel to the UK, restrictions on access to UK-based assets or prosecution under international law.”
