Gas explosion destroys several shops in Lagos community
On Sunday, a gas explosion blasted through a part of the Orisunmibare Market, located off Baale Street in the Orile-Iganmu region of Lagos State, demolishing multiple stores.
The fire, which claimed no lives, broke out about 2:13 p.m., destroying commodities worth many millions of naira and sent vendors and locals fleeing for safety.
The explosion was supposed to have started at a petrol retail establishment that allegedly had many cylinders of varied sizes.
The Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Mrs Margaret Adeseye, while confirming the incident, said operatives responded promptly and brought the situation under control.
“No lives were lost, except for one person who sustained a minor hand injury,” she said.
In another development, a team of firefighters responded to a 33,000-litre petrol tanker accident along the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, near the Berger Car Depot.
The tanker reportedly spilled its contents after colliding with a Mercedes-Benz Jeep and seven other stationary vehicles displayed for sale.
“Prompt intervention by the Ajegunle and Ijegun-Egba Fire Crews prevented the spill from escalating into another disaster. The remaining fuel has been safely transferred to another tanker, while recovery of damaged vehicles is ongoing,” Adeseye said.
