Lagos Govt reopens Admiralty–Jubilee section for yuletide after contractors vacate
The Lagos State Government has announced that contractors working on the rehabilitation of the Eti-Osa/Lekki/Epe Expressway—specifically the Admiralty Way Junction to Jubilee Bridge (Ajah) section—will vacate the site on Thursday, December 4, and return to complete the second phase of the project by mid-January 2025.
Officials stated that the decision aims to ease the persistent traffic gridlock caused by ongoing repairs, reduce travel time, and provide relief to commuters during the busy festive season.
The announcement followed a joint inspection of the project on Wednesday by the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi; the Special Adviser to the Governor on Infrastructure, Olufemi Daramola; representatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA); and the contractor, Messrs CRCC.
Osiyemi, after reviewing the progress of work, apologised to commuters for the hardship encountered in recent days and acknowledged the severe traffic situation along the corridor.
“I empathise with all the troubles road users have gone through in the last couple of days. It’s important for us to fix this road because bad roads also create traffic. We must find a balance,” he said.
The commissioner disclosed that palliative measures on the affected stretch would be completed and the road fully opened to traffic by the close of business on Thursday.
He added that the government is aware of the influx of visitors expected during the festive period and intends to ensure a pleasant travel experience.
“The roads will be open for everyone to use, and for the parts already fixed, Lagosians will be pleased. It’s a quality job that will significantly improve their experience,” he said.
Osiyemi noted that rehabilitation works would resume in January following further evaluations and the development of improved traffic management strategies.
Special Adviser Olufemi Daramola echoed this position, confirming that the Chevron intersection has already been opened.
He said the contractor had been instructed to temporarily demobilise and vacate the site to minimise hardship for road users.
“We appreciate the patience of Lagosians. By the end of tomorrow, we will stop all physical construction works and begin clearing the site. After further stakeholder engagements in January, the contractors are expected to return by mid-month,” he said.
Daramola emphasised that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu remains committed to rehabilitating the critical Eti-Osa/Lekki/Epe corridor, which serves key residential, commercial, and industrial zones, in line with the state’s goal of improving infrastructure and overall quality of life.
