Lagos govt rescues mentally challenged woman accused of disturbing community
The Lagos State Government has rescued a mentally challenged lady accused of disturbing neighbours in a neighbourhood in the state’s Agege region, following a viral video that attracted public attention to the matter.
The state’s government intervened after video footage leaked online this week showing a concerned woman begging with the authorities to preserve the community from incessant harassment purportedly caused by the mentally disturbed resident.
The speaker in the video, who appeared to be recording from a neighbouring building, stated that the lady, who lives at No. 31 Adedosu Street in Agege, had been throwing stones into people’s homes and holding hazardous weapons like a machete and knife.
“This mentally challenged individual will throw stones from one house to another.
“She also has a machete, knife, and other harmful tools. She said she has a gun.
“Come and save us from Ibukun Coker; we don’t want to die untimely in this neighbourhood,” the resident cried out in Yoruba.
The yet-to-be-identified resident in the viral clip, which was shared widely across social media platforms, narrated how the mentally ill patient poses threat in the community.
“Our children can’t play around because she throws stones. We’ve reported to several agencies, but they haven’t responded,” she alleged.
Reacting to the public outcry on Friday, the the state Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogunlende, confirmed in a post via his verified X handle that officials from the ministry’s Rescue Team had responded and evacuated the woman from the area for medical attention and rehabilitation.
“She has been taken to one of our centres for care.
“I urge the public to continue reporting any incidents requiring government intervention.
“We remain committed to ensuring social stability in Lagos. Let’s work together to make a difference,” Ogunlende wrote.
The commissioner also emphasised that the state government remains focused on protecting vulnerable persons while maintaining peace and order in communities.
The ministry urged residents to continue reporting similar cases through its emergency lines, assuring that no complaint related to public safety or welfare would be ignored.
