Lagos State Govt demolishes more buildings on water channels

The Lagos State Government has intensified its enforcement drive to ensure compliance with urban planning regulations and promote a safe, orderly, and sustainable physical environment.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, in a statement posted on X on Thursday, said the ongoing operation focuses on clearing structures obstructing the natural right-of-way of water channels across the state.
According to Wahab, the exercise demonstrates the government’s firm commitment to protecting critical infrastructure, preventing flooding, and ensuring public safety.
“Work is ongoing along the Airport Road channel to restore the right of way of water and ensure smooth flow across the drainage corridor,” Wahab stated.
“Structures built directly on the water path are being removed as part of the state government’s continuous efforts to address flooding, protect lives, and safeguard vital infrastructure.”
The commissioner reaffirmed that the state would not compromise its environmental standards, adding that residents must take responsibility by ensuring full compliance with physical planning and environmental regulations.
Meanwhile, in a related development, the Lagos State Government has issued a two-week ultimatum to traders and property developers within the Trade Fair Complex to regularise the approval status of their buildings.
The government emphasised that all developments within the complex must conform to existing physical planning laws, warning that failure to comply would attract appropriate sanctions.
