Tinubu ends two weeks official trip to Japan, Brazil, returns to Abuja

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu returned to Nigeria’s capital city after a two-week official trip that took him across Asia and South America, with major stops in Japan and Brazil.

The presidential jet touched down at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, at exactly 01:20 a.m. on Thursday, ending what officials described as a “highly productive international engagement tour.”

On arrival, Tinubu was received by top-ranking government functionaries, including the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu; Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila; the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike; Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq; as well as several ministers, special advisers, and senior aides.

The president departed Abuja on Friday, August 15, 2025, making a brief stopover in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, before proceeding to Yokohama, Japan.

While in Japan, Tinubu participated in the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9), held from August 20 to 22, 2025.

The high-profile summit brought together African leaders, Japanese government officials, and business executives to strengthen partnerships on investment, innovation, and sustainable development.

According to presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu also held a series of bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the conference and engaged with chief executives of Japanese companies with significant investments in Nigeria’s infrastructure, energy, and technology sectors.

Following his engagements in Japan, the Nigerian leader travelled to Brasilia, Brazil, on the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva for a state visit.

Discussions between both leaders reportedly centred on trade expansion, agricultural cooperation, renewable energy, and strengthening South-South collaboration.
