The official Twitter account of Indian Prime Minister Narenda Modi’s personal website was temporarily compromised by hackers on Thursday, Twitter confirmed in a statement.

Earlier today, the compromised account made several tweets, urging followers to donate bitcoins to the prime minister’s relief fund.

Twitter indicated it knew of the activity on the hacked account, and had made efforts to secure the account.

The account involved the in the attack, @Narendramodi_in, was created in 2011 and has over 2.5 million followers.

However, the prime minister’s verified personal Twitter account @narendramodi, which has close to 62 million followers was not affected by the breach.

Twitter said it was actively investigating the situation, and said it wasn’t was not “aware of additional accounts being impacted.”

As at the time of writing, the tweets have been deleted and the account secured.

The breach of Modi’s account follows a series of hacking attempts on certain high-profile Twitter account, which occurred in July.

Accounts compromised in the hacking included that of US presidential candidate Joe Biden, ex-US president Barack Obama, Microsoft boss Bill Gates and Tesla founder Elon Musk.

Official Twitter accounts belonging to technology companies Apple and Uber were also compromised in the breach.
