The Brazilian contingent, Team Brazil, emerged victorious in a spectacular display of speed, skill, and strategy at the Lagos E1 League, held on Saturday along the scenic Lagos Marina waterfront.

The high-octane event, part of the global E1 World Championship series—the world’s first all-electric powerboat racing league—brought together elite racing teams from across continents to compete for dominance on the waters of Lagos Lagoon.

Team Brazil, led by captain Lucas da Costa and co-pilot Maria Fernandes, delivered a flawless performance, overcoming fierce competition from Team USA and Team Nigeria, who finished second and third respectively.

The Brazilian racers demonstrated precision and consistency throughout the final laps, maintaining their lead despite challenging wind conditions and choppy waves that tested every pilot’s control and endurance.

“We came here determined to win, and Lagos gave us everything—heat, energy, and incredible fans,” said an elated Lucas da Costa after lifting the Lagos E1 trophy. “It’s an honour to race in Africa’s largest city and take this victory home for Brazil.”

The Lagos leg of the E1 League marked the first African stop on the global circuit, which has previously visited cities such as Jeddah, Venice, and Monaco. The event attracted thousands of spectators, including local dignitaries, sports enthusiasts, and environmental advocates, all eager to witness the fusion of sport and sustainability.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, commended the organizers for bringing the groundbreaking electric boat race to Lagos.
“This event not only showcases Lagos as a hub for innovation and global sports but also supports our vision for cleaner, sustainable waterways,” he said.

The E1 League’s unique concept features electric RaceBird boats—futuristic hydrofoil vessels powered entirely by renewable energy. Each boat can reach speeds of up to 90 km/h while gliding above the water’s surface, minimizing wave impact and carbon emissions.

Team Nigeria, captained by Yemi Adesina, thrilled the home crowd with a strong showing despite narrowly missing out on a podium finish in the preliminary rounds. “We gave our all, and the support from the Lagos fans was unbelievable. We’ll come back stronger for the next race,” Adesina said.

The victory propels Team Brazil to the top of the global E1 leaderboard, strengthening their chances for the championship title as the series heads to its next destination in Abu Dhabi later this year.

With the success of the Lagos race, local tourism officials predict a boost in international attention and future opportunities for eco-friendly sporting events in Nigeria.

“E1 has proven that sustainability and entertainment can go hand in hand,” said Tosin Oke, spokesperson for the Lagos Tourism Board. “This is just the beginning of a new chapter in sports innovation for our city.”

As fireworks lit up the Lagos skyline to celebrate Team Brazil’s win, fans left the marina inspired—not just by speed and skill, but by the promise of a cleaner, greener future for water sports.
