No fewer than 20 Nigerian Arrmy Generals have reportedly tested positive for COVID-19 following the death of General Officer Commanding, 6 Division, Port-Harcourt, Rivers State, Maj. Gen. John Irefin, who died from the virus last week.

Most of the infected Generals are said to have been exposed to the late Irefin during the annual Chief of Amry Staff’s annual conference, held in Abuja, last week.

The army halted the conference upon hearing news of Irefin’s death, while instructing attendees, including Minister of Defence, Bashir Magashi; Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai; and GOCs from various parts of the country, to self-quarantine.

According to reports, some of the infected Generals are receiving treatment at the COVID-19 Isolation Centre University of Abuja Teaching Hospital in the Gwagwalada area of Abuja.

Others are reportedly in isolation at various quarantine centres across the Federal Capital Territory of Abuja.

Meanwhile, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, announced on Sunday that he has entered mandatory self-isolation after some of his family members tested positive for COVID-19.

Mustapha, who is also the Chairman of the Presidential Task Force, released a statement updating Nigerians on his family’s health status, while urging them to follow COVID-19 guidelines.

“I would like to remind all Nigerians that COVID-19 is real. As the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control announced last week, we are recording an increase in cases across several states.”

“Please stay safe and protect yourself. Adhere to all public health and safety measures so that we do not lose the gains we have made in the fight against COVID-19,” he said in the statement.
