2027: Sowore says he will not seek medical treatment abroad

Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has said he will not travel abroad for medical treatment if elected president in 2027.

Sowore made the statement during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday while discussing his approach to governance and the use of public resources.

He said he would rely on healthcare facilities and medical professionals in Nigeria, even if he developed an illness that could not be treated locally.

“Any sickness that I can’t treat in Nigeria when I become president should better kill me. I can tell you that for free,” Sowore said.

The AAC candidate also said he would not use the presidency to advance the interests of his family.

Sowore reiterated his position that there should be no official Office of the First Lady under his administration, arguing that the position is not established by the Nigerian Constitution.

“There is no office of First Lady in the Nigerian Constitution. Becoming president will not abolish my marriage, but I will not have the office of First Lady,” he said.

He, however, said women would have a role in his administration, while questioning the use of public funds to maintain an office he considers unconstitutional.

“Women will be heard, but I don’t believe that you need a first lady who is holding an unconstitutional position and just wasting money that is meant for progress and projects,” he said.

Sowore said his positions on medical treatment and the First Lady’s office were part of his proposed approach to the management of public resources if elected president.
