2027: Wike says hunger, insecurity won’t stop Tinubu’s re-election

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu will be re-elected in the 2027 presidential election despite the challenges of hunger and insecurity in the country.

Wike stated this on Wednesday during a media chat in Abuja while discussing Tinubu’s chances in the next presidential election.

The former Rivers State governor argued that hunger and insecurity have featured in previous Nigerian elections and have not necessarily prevented voters from supporting an incumbent.

“There is no election in Nigeria where the issue of hunger and insecurity won’t come up,” Wike said.

He cited the 2015 presidential election, when Nigerians also raised concerns about insecurity and economic hardship under the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

According to him, political discussions around hunger and insecurity should be viewed alongside the political structures and support networks available to candidates across the country.

Wike also dismissed concerns about Tinubu’s support in the North, predicting that the President would secure at least 25 per cent of the votes in every northern state in 2027.

He further claimed that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar would struggle to secure 10 per cent of the votes in several southern states.

Wike said political analysts should therefore assess the strength of all candidates across different regions rather than focusing solely on the challenges confronting the Tinubu administration.

He maintained that the President remains capable of securing a second term despite criticism over the country’s economic and security situation.
