NIMC licenses telcos to provide NIN

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has licensed telecommunications companies to register people for the National Identity Number (NIN).
This is to address the problem of overcrowding at offices of the NIMC as citizens struggle to beat the deadline issued by the Federal Government for the blockage of all SIMs not registered with a valid NIN.
Director-General, NIMC, Aliyu Aziz, informed Punch Newspaper that some other private and public organisations have also been licensed by the commission to provide NINs in order to address the crowds at commission’s offices.
The Director-General in response to the inquiry about measures taken to address complaints by citizens and the crowds at the commission’s offices, said mobile network operators have been empowered to also give the identity numbers.
Also in regards to the 21-day ultimatum earlier issued by the management of NIMC in protest against the poor welfare issues at the commission, workers said the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, had constituted a committee to address their demands.
According to the President, Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, NIMC Unit, Asekokhai Lucky, the seven-man committee was set up by the minister to work on the issues and submit a report to him in two weeks times
