The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered a suspected counterfeit drinks production facility in Lagos State and arrested two persons in connection with the operation.

The facility was discovered at Zamfara Plaza, BBA Trade Fair Complex, along the Badagry Expressway, Ojo, where officials allegedly found expired drinks being repackaged for resale.

During the operation, NAFDAC operatives reportedly recovered alcoholic beverages and energy drinks, alongside chemicals, bottles, labels and other materials allegedly used to repackage the products.

The agency said the suspects allegedly obtained expired drinks from bars and nightclubs before removing or replacing their labels to make them appear fit for sale.

Some of the products reportedly included Bullet Energy Drink, Don Julio tequila and Jameson whiskey.

Speaking during the operation, an Assistant Director in NAFDAC’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate, Kunle Ojo, said the agency discovered equipment and materials allegedly used in the production and repackaging of counterfeit drinks.

Ojo warned that the circulation of adulterated and counterfeit beverages posed a serious public health risk, urging those involved to stop the practice.

He said the agency would investigate the source of the products and materials, as well as identify others who might be connected to the suspected operation.

NAFDAC also urged Nigerians to report suspected counterfeit products and illegal production facilities to the agency, assuring the public that it would continue enforcement operations to protect consumers.

The agency warned that those found culpable would face appropriate legal action.
