A severe traffic gridlock paralysed movement along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Monday, leaving commuters stranded for several hours as congestion spilled across both directions of the highway.

Motorists heading out of Lagos were caught in a long tailback stretching from the Alausa corridor to the Fatgbems/OPIC roundabout en route Mowe.

Those coming into the city faced an equally difficult situation, with traffic building up from the Long Bridge down to the same point.

The logjam was caused by a collision near the New Garage axis, where two vehicles reportedly caught fire and were completely razed.

The burnt vehicles created a major obstruction on the busy expressway, compounding an already difficult traffic situation and bringing movement to a near standstill for much of the day.
