Nigeria’s electricity supply is on the path to recovery following the successful repair of a key gas pipeline that had been damaged by vandalism, the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) announced on Friday.

The restoration of the vandalized Lagos-Escravos-Lagos gas supply infrastructure, carried out by the Nigerian Gas Infrastructure Company (NGIC), has led to enhanced gas delivery to several major thermal power plants nationwide.

This marks a significant step toward stabilizing the national grid and improving reliability for millions of consumers, according to NISO.Affected power plants have begun gradually ramping up electricity offtake to avoid straining the gas network or the grid.

This cautious approach aims to ensure steady supply for homes, businesses, and industries without risking further disruptions.Additional thermal plants are currently on standby, ready to come online once their gas suppliers confirm availability.

NISO expects these units to join the grid between now and Saturday, December 27, 2025, which should further increase generation capacity and help minimize outages.

The development comes after recent challenges, including disruptions to gas supply that impacted power output earlier this month. NISO is collaborating closely with generation companies, gas providers, and regulators to monitor the situation and address any issues in real time.

The operator reiterated its commitment to building a more resilient power system to support Nigeria’s economic growth. In the meantime, NISO encouraged consumers to practice energy conservation to aid ongoing stabilization efforts.

This improvement offers hope for better electricity access as the holiday season continues, though experts note that persistent infrastructure vulnerabilities, such as pipeline vandalism, remain a challenge for the sector.
