Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to the continuous demolition of distressed and unsafe structures across the state, as part of efforts to safeguard lives, property and the environment.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu stated this on Monday, explaining that the exercise is based on comprehensive safety assessments carried out by relevant government agencies, with public safety remaining a top priority of his administration.

According to the governor, buildings are required to maintain a minimum distance of 150 metres from high-tension power lines, adding that the state government has been engaging traditional rulers, including baales, in affected communities to ensure compliance.

Sanwo-Olu also dismissed criticisms from some groups opposing the demolitions, alleging that certain organisations were more interested in exploiting the situation for external funding rather than prioritising public safety.

“We will not hesitate to take decisive actions, including evacuation and demolition of distressed buildings, where they pose a threat to lives and public safety,” the governor said.

He noted that the measures were necessary to prevent avoidable disasters, particularly in densely populated areas of the state, stressing that the government preferred proactive intervention to reactive responses.

The governor urged residents to cooperate with government officials and comply with safety regulations, emphasising that such actions were taken in the collective interest of the public.

“These decisions are never taken lightly, but they are essential to protect lives and ensure the wellbeing of our people,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu further explained that the demolition exercise forms part of a broader environmental management strategy aimed at addressing structural failures, urban congestion and environmental risks in Lagos.

“Our responsibility goes beyond buildings; it includes protecting our environment and ensuring a safe, resilient and liveable Lagos for present and future generations,” he added.

He assured residents that the state government would continue to strengthen environmental monitoring and enforce building regulations to promote sustainable urban development and minimise risks associated with environmental degradation.
