Lagos shuts down Balmoral Convention Centre, restaurant for sewage breaches
The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office, LSWMO, on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, shut down Balmoral Convention Centre in Victoria Island over improper discharge of raw sewage into a public drainage system.
A statement by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources,Tokunbo Wahab, said the enforcement action followed reports that the facility was releasing untreated waste through a pumping machine, alongside unattended wastewater spillages from a blocked sewage chamber, which caused foul odour and environmental nuisance in the area.
“Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) on Tuesday 5th May, 2026, sealed off Balmoral Convention Centre, Victoria Island over indiscriminate discharge of raw sewage into the public drain via the use of a pumping machine and unattended Wastewater spillage from a blocked sewage chamber causing public nuisance and foul smell,” the statement said.
In a related move, the agency also sealed Foodies Restaurant located at No. 32B, Admiralty Way, Lekki Phase I, Eti-Osa, Lagos, for discharging untreated wastewater into public drains.
Authorities said the wastewater contained heavy deposits of fat and oil, which blocked the drainage channels and led to pollution, offensive smell, and disruption to the environment, despite repeated warnings issued to the establishment.
The Lagos State Government stressed the need for residents and property managers to strictly follow approved wastewater disposal methods.
It warned that individuals or organisations found violating environmental laws would face appropriate sanctions, including possible prosecution, in line with existing regulations.
