The Lagos State Government has announced the indefinite closure of the outbound section of Eko Bridge for emergency safety investigations and repair works.

The closure, which will take effect from Tuesday, May 12, 2026, affects the stretch between Apongbon and Ijora Olopa heading toward Lagos Island.

Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed the development in a statement on Sunday, advising motorists to make use of alternative routes during the repair period.

According to him, commuters travelling toward Lagos Island through the affected corridor should divert to the Third Mainland Bridge to reach their destinations.

He added that the inward Lagos Island carriageway would remain open to traffic, while traffic management and security officials would be deployed along alternative routes to ease congestion and maintain order.

The state government said the emergency action became necessary to allow authorities carry out critical structural assessments and rehabilitation works on the bridge. However, no timeline was given for the completion of the repairs.

The development comes amid growing concerns over the condition of major bridges in Lagos, following recent inspections and rehabilitation efforts on key transport infrastructure across the state.
