One person has died while three others were rescued following the collapse of a two-storey building under construction in the Fadeyi area of Lagos State.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, on Friday.

According to Oke-Osanyintolu, the building collapsed in the early hours of Friday on Akinola Street, near Fadeyi Bus Stop, off Ikorodu Road.

He said the agency received a distress call at about 12:10 a.m., prompting the immediate deployment of its Cobra Response Team from the Onipanu Base.

The team arrived at the scene two minutes later and discovered that the building had collapsed, with construction workers suspected to be trapped beneath the debris.

Search and rescue operations commenced immediately, with emergency responders putting safety measures in place to protect both the victims and personnel at the scene.

Oke-Osanyintolu said rescuers heard groaning sounds beneath the rubble, suggesting that more people might have survived the collapse.

He added that an excavator was deployed to facilitate the rescue operation.

The three rescued victims received emergency medical attention from LASEMA paramedics and the Lagos State Ambulance Service before being taken to hospital for further treatment.

Other agencies involved in the operation included the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and police officers from the Alagbon Division.

The LASEMA chief said the cause of the collapse had yet to be established, adding that relevant regulatory agencies would investigate the incident.

He expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the rescued victims a speedy recovery.

Oke-Osanyintolu also reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to addressing substandard construction practices and strengthening monitoring and enforcement measures in collaboration with the Lagos State Building Control Agency.
