The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered an illegal herbal products manufacturing facility in Agege, Lagos State, and arrested its manager.

The agency said the operation followed an investigation into herbal products allegedly bearing falsified NAFDAC registration numbers.

According to NAFDAC, its investigative team conducted surveillance before discovering three variants of Asheitu Adams Bitters bearing registration number A7-1827L.

The agency said verification through its NAFDAC Automated Product Administration and Monitoring System (NAPAMS) portal revealed that the registration number belongs to Greentol Cough Syrup, indicating that it had been fraudulently used on the herbal products.

NAFDAC disclosed that the company’s managing director and chief executive officer was absent during the operation, while the facility’s manager was arrested for further interrogation.

The agency said the discovery raised concerns about the authenticity of herbal products sold to Nigerians and the use of falsified registration details to mislead consumers.

NAFDAC urged members of the public to report suspected illegal manufacturing activities and other regulatory violations.

It provided its call centre numbers, 0800-1-623322 and 0700-1-623322, as well as its official email address, reforms@nafdac.gov.ng, for receiving credible information.

The agency reiterated its commitment to protecting public health through enforcement operations against unregistered, falsified and potentially unsafe regulated products.
