2026 U-17 WWC: Flamingos receive $50,000 cash reward after historic win
Nigeria’s Flamingos have received a cash reward of $50,000 following their historic triumph at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
The reward was presented to the team on Saturday night by Alhaji Saleh Ahmadu, a sponsor of the National Sports Commission (NSC), during a reception held in honour of the players and officials in Rabat, Morocco.
The event was attended by NSC Chairman, Shehu Dikko; Director-General, Bukola Olopade; and Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi.
The team is also expected to receive additional incentives from other stakeholders following its achievement.
The Flamingos made history on Saturday after defeating Japan 2-1 in the final to win their first-ever FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup title.
Awawu Bashiru opened the scoring for Nigeria in the 39th minute before Oluebube Umejiaku doubled the lead shortly after the restart.
Japan reduced the deficit through Fuki Ito in the 80th minute, but Nigeria held on to secure the victory.
The triumph made Nigeria the first African country to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, marking a major milestone for women’s football on the continent.
The victory also ended Nigeria’s wait for the title after the team’s previous best finish was third place at the 2022 edition in India.
