The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has challenged President Bola Tinubu to visit the remaining 33 states of the federation and explain how his administration has used public funds.

Obi made the call in a post on his X account on Saturday, following Tinubu’s overnight stay in Akwa Ibom State.

Tinubu had attended an All Progressives Congress (APC) rally in Uyo on Friday, where he described his stay in the state as a “second term presidential sleep”.

Reacting, Obi said he hoped the President’s visit would encourage him to travel to other states and engage with Nigerians on the performance of his government.

“I sincerely hope this visit will inspire you to travel to the remaining 33 states of the federation, spend time with the people and, more importantly, explain what your administration has done with the ₦15.8 trillion saved from the removal of fuel subsidy, the over $100 billion you have borrowed,” Obi wrote.

The former Anambra State governor also called on Tinubu to account for increased tax revenue and other government earnings.

He raised questions about the administration’s record on poverty, education, healthcare, electricity and security.

Obi asked how many Nigerians had been lifted out of poverty, how many out-of-school children had returned to classrooms and how many functional primary healthcare centres had been established.

He also questioned improvements in electricity supply, recalling Tinubu’s earlier promise that Nigerians should not vote for him if he failed to resolve the country’s power challenges.

On security, Obi said the President should explain what his government had done to protect citizens.

“Mr President, Nigerians deserve answers. They deserve to know what has been done with the resources entrusted to your government,” he added.

Obi said accountability and measurable improvements in citizens’ welfare should be central to governance.
