ASUU gives reason for unending strike action

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has said the refusal of the government to take necessary steps is the reason for the prolonged strike action.

The national leader of the union, Prof Biodun Ogunyemi, said this while speaking on Channels TV, on Friday.

Ogunyemi said the union had presented five demands to the federal government and they have not been fully entertained.

According to him, the federal government has not taken necessary steps especially in terms of adopting the union’s preferred home-grown University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) which is one of its demands.

A meeting which had held on Wednesday between the leadership of ASUU and delegates of the federal government, ended in an impasse, with both sides failing to reach an agreement.

The federal government team headed by the minister of labour and employment, Chris Ngige, had insisted that the N30billion earned allowance would only be paid through IPPIS while the ASUU chairman had insisted that the payment be made through UTAS.

Both parties eventually decided on another meeting scheduled to hold next week Wednesday, November 4.
