Atiku Accuses Tinubu of Abandoning Retired Police Officers to Hardship
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of neglecting retired police officers, citing reports of inadequate pensions and the financial difficulties confronting former personnel.
Atiku said the situation raised concerns about the welfare of officers who had spent years serving the country and protecting lives and property.
The ADC presidential candidate’s criticism comes amid renewed calls by retired police officers for the Federal Government to address their pension concerns and remove the Nigeria Police Force from the Contributory Pension Scheme.
The retirees have complained that their monthly pensions are insufficient to meet basic needs, including food, healthcare and accommodation.
Reports on the pension dispute have highlighted the case of a retired Assistant Superintendent of Police who reportedly receives about N29,000 monthly, as well as that of a retired commissioner of police said to be seeking a cleaning job to make ends meet.
The Police Retired Officers Forum of Nigeria has called on the Federal Government, the National Pension Commission and the Inspector-General of Police to fulfil commitments concerning pension increases and gratuity payments.
The retirees have also demanded the establishment of a separate pension arrangement for police personnel, arguing that the current scheme does not adequately provide for them after years of service.
The Federal Government has previously acknowledged the concerns raised by retired police officers and said it was committed to addressing their welfare and pension issues.
Atiku’s criticism adds to the debate over the government’s handling of the economy and the welfare of Nigerians, particularly retirees struggling with rising living costs.
