Blasphemy: Court rejects death sentence on Kano singer

By Modupe Shodeinde

The Kano State High Court has set aside death sentence passed on Kano singer, Aminu Yahaya Sharif, for blasphemy and ordered a retrial of the case against him.

The judgement was delivered on Thursday by the State Chief Judge Nuraddeen Sagir, after Sharif filed an appeal to challenge the sentence.

The Chief Judge on grounds that the lower court’s proceedings were characterised by irregularities, ordered that the case be tried before different judge, and Sharif be granted full legal representation.

Music studio assistant Yahaya Sharif-Aminu was sentenced to death by hanging on August 10 after being convicted of blasphemy by an Islamic court in northern Nigeria.

The 22-year-old was convicted for making “a blasphemous statement against Prophet Mohammed in a WhatsApp Group,” which is contrary to the Kano State Sharia Penal Code and is an offence which carries the death sentence.
