 CBN warns public to beware of scam schemes

The Central Bank of Nigeria in a statement on Thursday, has warned Nigerians to be cautious of fraudulent loan offers and investment schemes.

The statement titled, ‘Beware of fraudulent loan offers, investment schemes.’ by the acting Director, Corporate Communications, CBN, Osita Nwanisobi, enjoined the public to beware of unverified investment schemes.

The CBN said its attention had been drawn to messages and videos circulating on social media, asking the owners of small-scale businesses to apply for loans and investment schemes supposedly facilitated by the bank.

The Director said, “For the avoidance of doubt, there are clearly spelt out procedures for accessing CBN intervention funds, which are disbursed through Participating Finance Institutions, such as Deposit Money Banks, Development Finance Institutions and Microfinance Banks.

He also stated that the CBN does not facilitate investment schemes.

Nwanisobi urged the public, especially youths and owners of small businesses, to disregard any such message or video on social media asking for their application for loans or investment schemes purportedly endorsed by the appex bank.

He advised prospective applicants to approach their respective banks or the CBN branch nearest to them for clarification on the procedure for accessing any of the bank’s related facility.

He further warned that whoever enters into any correspondence with anyone behind the videos and messages, does so at his/her own risk.
