Coastal Road helping to fight Lagos flooding, not causing it—Umahi
The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has strongly dismissed suggestions that the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road project is responsible for the recent flooding in Lagos State.
Appearing on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Tuesday, Umahi insisted that the highway is actually contributing to flood reduction rather than worsening the situation.
He explained that the road was deliberately raised to withstand flooding for the next 30 years and beyond. “The road is not the cause of the flooding in Lagos; it is reducing it,” the minister stated.
Umahi also used the platform to spotlight other infrastructure strides under the Tinubu administration, revealing that over 100,000 jobs have been created through various projects and that the naira has been stabilised.
He announced that the 360km (dual carriage) Akwa Ibom section of the Lagos-Calabar Highway has been awarded, while the Sokoto-Lagos highway has reached about 60% completion. The minister described President Bola Tinubu’s focus on infrastructure as a major driver of national development that opponents cannot match.
