 Court jails man for stealing boxers from supermarket

A Grade 1 Area Court in Karu, Abuja, has sentenced one Kabiru Zakari to 40 days in prison for stealing boxers from a supermarket.

The judge, Inuwa Maiwada, convicted Zakari after he pled guilty to two counts of criminal trespass and theft.

However, Maiwada gave the convict the option of paying a fine of N150,000, while warning him against perpetrating crimes in future.

He also instructed that the convict receive intensive Islamic tuition at the person to remould his character.

The prosecutor, Ayotunde Adeyanju, had earlier told the court the convict trespassed into Fordmart Supermarket and picked a packet of sweets, two bottles of water, and three boxers, worth N4,500.

According to him, Zakari had hid the boxers in his clothing while he paid for the sweets and bottled water to pass the security.

“However, unknown to the convict, that he was captured by the supermarket CCTV and during police investigation, he confessed to the crime,” Adeyanju said.

The prosecutor said the police got wind of the incident after the supermarket’s manager, Agida Stephen, made a report at the Karu Police Station on November 6, 2020.

He further told the court that the said offence contravened Sections 348 and 288 of the Penal Code.
