Don’t extend hate of Buhari to Nigerian institutions, aide warns

Senior Special Assistant to the Presidency on Social Media, Lauretta Onochie, has asked Nigerians to avoid extending their hate of the President to other institutions in the country.

“If you choose to hate our President and Legislators, it’s okay but that hatred must not be extended to Nigeria and her institutions,” she wrote on Twitter on Wednesday.

Onochie further urged Nigerians to take an example from Americans who continue to defend their democracy against attacks from President Donald Trump who lost the November 2020 Presidential Election to Democratic challenger Joe Biden.

“While President Trump is denigrating America’s electoral system, Americans are fiercely defending the integrity of their electoral body, that’s patriotism.

“We must stand by our institutions as they make progress towards serving us better,” Onochie added.

Onochie had recently been in the news after her nomination by Buhari for post of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) drew the ire of Nigerians.

Many, including the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, had asked for an immediate reversal of the decision, calling it an attack on Nigeria’s democracy.
