Edison Cavani completes deadline day transfer to Man Utd

Manchester United have signed Edison Cavani from Paris Saint-Germain on a two-year deal, the club announced on Monday.

Cavani became a free agent after his contract ran out at PSG, where he has spent the last seven seasons, scoring 200 goals in total.

The Uruguayan forward said “Manchester United is one of the greatest clubs in the world, so it is a real honour to be here.

“I’ve worked really hard during the time off and I feel eager to compete and represent this incredible club.”

United have faced criticism from both fans and the media for their reluctance to sign players during the summer transfer window. The only player the Red Devils signed before Monday was Ajax player Donny Van de Beek.

However, United swung into action following a 6-1 defeat to Tottenham over the weekend, signing both Cavani and defender Alex Telles (£13.5 million) from Porto on transfer deadline day.

Red Devils coach Ole Gunnar Solksjaer said of Cavani’s transfer: “The opportunity for our young players to learn from one of Europe’s top goalscorers over the last 10 years is fantastic and it will really benefit them going forward,” said Solskjaer.

“He’ll bring energy, power, leadership and a great mentality to the squad but, most importantly, he’ll bring goals.

“He has had a brilliant career so far, winning trophies at almost every club he has played for, and he still has so much more to give at the highest level.”
