Edo Gubernatorial Election: US Calls For Free And Fair Process

By Emmanuel Awosika

The US has called for a “free, fair, transparent, and peaceful process” as the Edo Governorship election slated to hold in September approaches.

This was contained in a statement released by the US Consulate in Abuja. In the statement, it expressed support for “a democratic process where the will of the people is reflected in the results, and does not favour any party or candidate.”

The US also expressed worry at rising tensions in the Edo polity where a series of actions have sparked fears of election-related violence.

“We are concerned with reports of the deteriorating political climate in Edo and are disappointed with the role played by some political actors in the state.”

“We are especially concerned with allegations of interference by security forces in political matters, which we will continue to monitor closely in the run up to gubernatorial elections in September,” it said.

The US charged the INEC and other stakeholders including political parties and security personnel to improve the electoral process. It promised that, as a long-time ally, it would continue to monitor political developments ahead of the coming elections in the country.
