#EndSARS: Army displeased Sanwo-Olu denied inviting military — General

By Emmanuel Awosika

An Army Officer, Brig. Gen. Ahmed Taiwo, told the Lagos Judicial Panel on Saturday that the Army was displeased after Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, denied inviting the military to restore order on Oct. 10, 2020, the day soldiers shot at #EndSARS protesters gathered at the Lekki Tollgate.

The Army General said Sanwo-Olu was right for asking the military to restore order following the violence and anarchy that trailed the #EndSARS protests.

He, however, said the Army was also displeased with the governor for saying two persons died in the military action at the Lekki Tollgate.

“I spoke with the governor and said the Army was unhappy that he said he did not ask for Army’s intervention but I am sure that after you watched everything (video footages), you saw he had more than enough grounds to ask for Army’s intervention; perhaps it was the way everything went,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu had denied knowledge of the military involvement that led to the shooting of #EndSARS protesters at the Lekki Tollgate, saying “forces beyond my control” were responsible for the incident.

However, the Army had refuted the Governor’s claims, stating that he had, in fact, invited them to disperse protesters at the Lekki Tollgate.

The Governor has faced heavy criticism in the weeks following the shooting of #EndSARS protesters, the incident condemned both locally and internationally.
