EPL: Man City Thrash Liverpool 3-0, Extend Lead at Top of Table
Manchester City strengthened their grip on the Premier League summit with a 3-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.
Second-half goals from Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki secured the win for City, who maintained their perfect start to the league campaign with six victories from six matches.
The result moved City to 18 points, three clear of second-placed Arsenal, while Liverpool dropped to ninth following their first league defeat of the season.
Liverpool started brightly in front of their home supporters but struggled to convert their early pressure into goals.
Both sides created opportunities before the break, but goalkeepers Alisson Becker and Gianluigi Donnarumma kept the score level.
Liverpool’s hopes suffered a major setback in the 62nd minute when midfielder Ryan Gravenberch was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for a foul on Doku.
City capitalised on their numerical advantage three minutes later when Haaland fired into the net after Doku’s attempt fell into his path.
Doku doubled the visitors’ lead in the 68th minute with a superb curling effort into the far top corner.
Cherki completed the scoring in the 78th minute, finishing from close range after a move involving Josko Gvardiol.
The victory marked a significant response from City following a turbulent week off the pitch, as the club had been found guilty of breaches of Premier League financial rules by an independent commission. City have appealed the verdict and deny wrongdoing.
Manager Enzo Maresca’s side will now turn their attention to their next fixtures as they seek to maintain their unbeaten run and extend their advantage at the top of the table.
