Exercise patience with laws you have misgivings about — Buhari

By Emmanuel Awosika

President Muhammadu Buhari has asked Nigerians to exercise patience when dealing with laws they have any misgivings about.

He said Nigerians should instead “engage the process in line with democratic practices.”

Buhari said this at the start of a two-day executive-leadership retreat at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, themed ‘Promoting effective executive-legislative partnership, finding a middle ground’.

He described the process of governance and lawmaking as a dynamic and ever changing, asking Nigerians to be patient when a new law they don’t like comes into effect.

He stated, “Let me also remind our common patriots, gentlemen and women, that the process of law making and governance is dynamic and ever evolving.

“I will seek their indulgence to be patient with any legislation or law which they have certain misgivings about and engage the process in line with democratic practices.

Our interest is sincere promotion of our collective will and aspiration to build a nation where justice, peace, and progress are the norm.”

The President also commended the collaboration between the executive and legislative arm, saying it had enabled the government achieve its development goals with ease.

He added that this collaboration was responsible for the Federal Government’s swift response to changes in the economy, citing the review of the 2020 budget (due to the COVID-19 pandemic) as an example.
