 FG commences free meter distribution in Lagos and other states

The Federal Government has commenced distribution of free electricity meters to nationwide, today.

According to reports the distribution will commence on Friday, October 30, in Kano, Kaduna, Eko, and Ikeja DISCO franchise areas.

The Punch newspaper reported that the free distribution of meters is in fulfilment of the promise of the President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure mass metering in the country and also put an end to the problem of estimated billing in the electricity sector.

The locations to receive the meters is said to include Bawo Road and environs in Kano metropolis (KEDCO); Governor Road/Tudun Wada in Kaduna (Kaduna Electric); Oshodi Business Unit in Ikeja (Ikeja Electric); and Yaba and Surulere (Eko Disco).

The free distribution would be carried out under the National Mass Metering Programme(NMMP)

The newspaper also cited sources in the presidency as saying that the NMMP plans to distribute six million meters over the next 18 to 24 months to consumers nationwide.

The Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, confirmed the development.
