No fewer than three traditional rulers were killed on Tuesday when gunmen invaded Nnenasa community in Njaba LGA of Imo state.

Several others sustained serious gunshot injuries during the attack.

The royal fathers were in the middle of a meeting in the area when the gunmen struck.

Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, Michael Abattam, confirmed the incident.

“Yes, we have gotten the report and it is only three traditional rulers that died in the attack,” he said.

The incident resulted in commotion in the community, as the gunmen, who stormed the area in large numbers, shot sporadically.

The royal fathers who sustained injuries in the incident were said to have been “rushed to a hospital for treatment”.

The identities of the victims could not be ascertained as of press time.

A resident, who pleaded anonymity, expressed concern over the incident, urging the state government to improve on its efforts to restore peace.

“Things are really getting out of hand in Imo state. Imagine killing our revered traditional rulers like they are nothing. Something must be done as quickly as possible to bring back peace and security in every part of Imo state and in the south-east region,” he said.
