 Gunmen raid hospital in Bayelsa, cart away cash, valuables

Unknown gunmen in the early hours of Tuesday raided the Diete Koki Memorial Hospital, Opolo, Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, carting away cash and valuables belonging to patients and staff of the hospital.

The incident, which reportedly occurred about three o’ clock in the morning saw the armed men entering the hospital through the perimeter fence at the back of the building.

One of the doctors on call, Okeleghel Awudumapu, who narrated his ordeal to our correspondent, said the two-man gang took him unawares while returning from his call room.

Doctor Awudumapu, said his belongings and that of patients from the labour ward and their family members were all carted away.

Reacting to the incident, the Medical Director, Dr Emmanuel Fetepigi, described the act as barbaric, adding that management would collaborate with the Ministry of Health to ensure measures were put in place to forestall future occurrence.

Meanwhile, a security man at the hospital, Mr James Benini, noted that it was the second time burglars invaded the hospital premises.

Spokesman of the Bayelsa Police Command said he was yet to be briefed about the incident by the Divisional Police Office (DPO) in charge of the area.
